Frequently Asked Questions

A brief history of massage

Massage is considered to be among the oldest of all health treatments in recorded human history. Chinese records going back three thousand years document its use. The ancient Hindus, Persians, and Egyptians used forms of massage for some ailments, and Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems. Today, massage is an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs and has proven beneficial in the treatment of many chronic conditions such as low-back pain, arthritis, and bursitis. Massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday life.

Take care of yourself

Current research shows that you may feel better if you take some simple, but necessary steps regarding health and nutrition in this age of multi-tasking and increased stress. Stress relief alone may improve your vitality and state of mind. Therapeutic massage can play an important role in your stress reduction and self-care plan, especially if you are able to schedule sessions on a regular or recurring basis.

What are the benefits of massage?

Massage can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure and stress. Massage is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety, and create an overall sense of wellbeing.

Can massage benefit me?

Massage has been proven to provide relief and relaxation to many people—the weekend or competitive athlete, the home gardener, the overstressed executive struggling to keep pace in today's economy, busy administrative assistants, laborers, waitresses—anyone may feel the need for therapeutic massage at some point in time. The older population, as well, may benefit from massage, as it enhances flexibility and circulation. There are some conditions, however, where massage is not advisable. Your practitioner will ask for information regarding any specific health conditions from which you may be suffering in order to determine if massage is contraindicated. In some cases, the practitioner may need your doctor's permission before providing services.

Are there any medical conditions that make massage inadvisable?

Yes. This is why your practitioner will always ask you general health questions prior to beginning any session. It is very important that you inform your practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage prior to any session. If you are being treated for any medical condition, your practitioner may require a recommendation or approval from your doctor.

Must I be completely undressed?

Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, you may decide what amount of clothing you prefer to wear for your own comfort. You will always be properly draped and covered during the session.

Will the practitioner be present when I disrobe?

No. The practitioner will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet and warm blanket.

Will I be covered during the session?

You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.

Where will my massage take place?

Your massage session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table specially designed for your comfort.

What should I do during my massage session?

Make yourself comfortable. The practitioner may gently move you and tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax. Feel free to ask the practitioner questions about massage in general or about the particular technique you are receiving.

What will the massage feel like?

It depends on the techniques used. In a general, relaxation massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and ease exterior muscle tension. As your body unwinds, pressure will gradually be increased to relax and relieve specific areas of muscular tension. You should communicate with your practitioner immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage is most effective when your body is not resisting.

How will I feel after the massage session?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. Many people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity, which can last for days. Since toxins may be released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water afterward to help flush them out of your system.
